A World Where There Are Octobers

On the way home from the doctor’s office, I passed a field of pumpkins. I slowed my car and watched children run ahead of their parents and tumble over hay bales on their way to the middle of the field. The scene stimulated images of my children and our annual pumpkin patch outings long ago. When I arrived home, I jotted down my memories. Later I found this quote from Anne of Green Gables. A perfect pairing.

Field of Pumpkins

An October World

Cool mornings

warm blankets

pumpkin spice coffee

fuzzy slippers

thick sweaters

knitted hats

children run through

fields of orange

bright and pure

scratchy hay bales

hold round treasures

destined for cement thrones

leaves release like

lazy raindrops

undressing lean limbs

denim blue sky

softens to indigo

while a topaz sun sets

fireplaces sputter

oak, eucalyptus, pine

beckons home through closed doors

murmurs rise to giggles

while knives carve smooth flesh

into jack o lanterns

stews bubble, cinnamon apples bake

chilly evenings, cozy wraps

ease into Autumn

What do you love about Autumn?
